This native of Aberfoyle, Ontario moved to Guelph in 1896 at the age of four. In his younger days he was quite a softball player for the Guelph Stove Company team which often made it to the Ontario finals.
However, Roy Mason is best remembered for bringing Junior ‘A’ hockey to Guelph as far back as 1929. He was instrumental in forming the ‘Bing 10’, a group of citizens who contributed funds to give Guelph the Biltmore Madhatters hockey team. Mason was the General manager of the 1951-52 Biltmore club that won the Memorial Cup, and he managed to pull off some amazing trades, that are still talked about today.
Mason was also very active in baseball as a sponsor, in fact, his 1950 Junior Intercounty team went on to win the Ontario championship. After his death in 1959, one local scribe wrote, “His outstanding work as a true sportsman and public-spirited citizen will stand as an everlasting record in his memory”.
